< Back to News Home Rob Huffmaster strikes podium in Thunderhill 25 Hours

Posted (12/21/2007) - Rob Huffmaster expanded his portfolio of experiences by competing in the NASA Thunderhill 25 Hours held on December 1st and 2nd. The Northern California event is the longest endurance race in North America.

"Before the race, I received a significant amount of seat time in the MX-5. This was key for the competition coming up in the race. I had never been to Thunderhill before and had only driven a MX-5 on track days." - stated Rob Huffmaster

Driving for Team MER in their #89 Mazda MX-5, Rob was given the honor of qualifying and starting the race. Also driving with Rob would be Eric Curran, Richie Hearn and Dane Moxlow.

"One of my stints was from 11 pm to 2 am in the morning. Racing at night was very educational. I know that this experience will pay dividends in the future when the opportunity to race in the ROLEX 24 Hours presents itself." - stated Rob

As to be expected in a long race, the #89 Mazda spent its share of time behind the wall working on problems. In the end though, Team MER and Rob Huffmaster persevered to finish for 615 labs to place 8th overall and 3rd place in the E1 class. Team MER also claimed the 3rd overall and the top spot in E1 as well in the sister #92 Mazda.

"It was great to have a chance to drive a MX-5 for so many hours in the race. With the Mazda shootout coming up, the knowledge base we gained at the Thunderhill 25 hours will be invaluable during this 2 day event." - states Rob

The Mazda Shootout will be held at Buttonwillow Raceway in January. The other four Mazda drivers invited all won SCCA National Championships at the 2007 SCCA Runoffs; Thomas Thrash Jr. (E Production), Jesse Prather (F Production), Brad Rampelberg (Spec Miata) and Jim Goughary Jr. (Formula Mazda).

All participants will be tested on their speed, data analysis, knowledge of chassis dynamics and PR prowess. The winner will receive a new Mazda MX-5 and MAZDASPEED parts kit valued at $50,000, to compete in the SCCA Pro Racing SIRIUS Satellite Radio Mazda MX-5 Cup.
